Australia’s First Carbon Neutral Pub
Fight Global Warming & Climate Change with a Greenhouse Friendly, Carbon Neutral Pub
The saying “Carbon neutral beer, anyone?” may sound foreign to you for now… but not for long.
The Agincourt Hotel is proud to say it’s Australia’s first greenhouse friendly, carbon neutral pub! This makes Agincourt the first pub in Australia to offer its clients the opportunity to order 'green beer' (carbon neutral beer) and to help offset greenhouse emissions. It does this by investing 2.5 cents from each beer sold into energy efficiency initiatives, such as renewable energy installations and tree plantations. By doing so, the Agincourt Hotel is helping to reduce its carbon footprint by putting back into the environment more than it takes out.
With global warming and climate change on the centre stage of world news, it’s hard to ignore the grim reality of a pending crisis. Here in Australia, we’ve already started to see the effects of global warming – extended droughts, water restrictions, diminishing dam levels and rising temperatures. In fact, scientists will tell you Australia has the most to loose out of any country due to its relative position on the globe. Unfortunately, recent media attention surrounding the ‘Kyoto Protocol’ and increasing awareness of global warming does not change the fact that as of 2005, Australia is now the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases per capita*.
The Agincourt Hotel received its certification from the Carbon Reduction Institute of Australia on 1 February, 2007, where it has been certified as a NoCO2 Organisation. That is, its activities are deemed ‘carbon neutral’, having totally negated the carbon dioxide emissions embodied in their products and those produced by running the pub.
What is Global Warming & Climate Change? Why a Carbon Neutral Pub? Global warming and climate change are the most pressing issues for human survival as we know it. Caused by the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), global warming and climate change is linked directly to the emission of greenhouse gases produced in our daily lives. Carbon dioxide is emitted when planes are flown, cars are driven, electricity is used and when rubbish decomposes in landfill. These activities occur through commercial and manufacturing processes; through the delivery of goods and services and by commercial retailers that sell these products onto consumers.
Why Agincourt took the lead in Australia’s Battle with Global Warming & Climate Change
Surveys show that 86% of Australians believe not enough is being done about global warming and climate change. When Matthew Jones, the licensee of the Agincourt Hotel learned of this, he immediately sought to calculate the impact Agincourt had on Australia’s environment in terms of total carbon dioxide greenhouse emissions. When calculated, the figure returned was 562,683 kilograms per year - a number that sounds high but is dangerously common for many organisations. When Matthew combined the large percentage of climate aware customers (86%) with Australia’s love of ‘pub culture’, he suddenly saw an opportunity to display environmental leadership among pubs, demonstrating responsibility towards Agincourt's emissions by becoming a carbon neutral pub.
So come and have a beer at Australia's first carbon neutral pub and help solve climate change one beer at a time!

About Agincourt - Australia's First Carbon Neutral Pub The Agincourt Hotel is one of Sydney's oldest "watering holes". By becoming a carbon neutral pub and through serving carbon neutral beer, we are demonstrating our commitment to the environment by reducing greenhouse emissions to slow global warming and climate change.
